Until World War I, German was the primary language spoken in Hermann. In fact, some children were discouraged from speaking English for fear it would cause them to speak German with an accent. Today, there are only a handful of residents still alive who grew up in German-speaking homes. But the occasional "Hermann-German" phrase still finds its way into conversation.
